October of 2002, season of white truffles, full moon in the Venice night. We came to buy some objects for the Hotel which was nearly finishing.
We were sitting on the deck of an apartment we had rented, close to the water of the Grand Canal, absolutely magnificent. In the second-story window, a boy very similar to Tadzio, in A Death In Venice, looks to Isay, who returned the look. Two wonderful women in their party dresses, going to Rialto on the aft of the vaporetto, wave to Rogério.
He is happy. One of them, a brunette with a Chanel-like cut wearing a pearl necklace, winks at me. In a manner somewhat magical Gustav Mahler’s 5th Symphony seems to be coming from I don’t know where. Gondolas come and go. On one of them, 3 Frenchmen are drinking champagne. All is perfect, or better, all is wrong. At that instant I notice a “Topovia” under the deck where hundreds, rather, thousands of rats are scurrying among the houses. Instantly we retreat.
The end of one more attempt at utopian perfection. Thank God!
